Design is a service industry
When I am playing the role of illustrator, art director or graphic designer working with a client, I am no longer playing in the realm of creating for creation sake. I am in a service industry and I better make my client happy. Why? Because design is a business and I want my business to grow.
Why did it take Michelangelo over four years to paint the Sistine Chapel? Because he didn’t want the job and dragged his feet. He considered himself a sculptor but Pope Julius II insisted. So why did he then take the job? Because painting was his business and he didn’t want to piss off the richest client in known Christian world.
The same client/creative mentality lives on today. Businesses look at creative as an expense not an asset. In the meantime, I take jobs that I may not enjoy because I am building something bigger than that single brochure or logo or spot image. I am building a business based on quality design, clear communication, and fulfilling one objective. Making my client happy.
